How we decided on Glebe

By Barbara Buchanan

We moved into this neighbourhood in August of 1998 and decided to start church shopping after Labour Day. We began and ended our shopping expedition here at Glebe Road United. Of the many reasons why we immediately felt at home was the fact that Marion and Heather were embraced in the Sunday School and, at the end of the first service when Carolyn Bromley was teaching the multi-age group, Marion announced that she was coming back the next week and told me what they would be doing. To seal the deal, Carolyn invited the girls to Swiss Chalet for lunch. We were won over by the promise of the Quarter Chicken Dinner!

For 13 years I have represented the church school program on our Board of Directors. My daughters are now adults, who have benefited greatly from their involvement over the years, and it is someone else’s turn. My job has been made easy because of the wonderful teachers who have offered their time, talent and enthusiasm over the years. There are many larger, better organized Sunday School programs in the city with beautiful rooms to learn and play in, but I like to think of our Sunday School as the one with heart. In the words of Dave on the Vinyl Café about his little record shop, We’re not big, but we’re small.

You do not need to be a parent, but you should feel passionate about engaging and supporting our young people, who are our present joy and our future in the church. I look forward to speaking with those who would like to make a difference.
