Environment

Ambury's previous career in atmospheric science and climatology brings special gifts to the church as it confronts the ecological crises.

In a recent panel discussion at Glebe Road led by Ambury, one of his teachers and two former scientific colleagues, the following questions were raised:

  • Isn't it true that much of the ecological crisis has been caused by Christianity with its emphasis on the next world and the destruction of this one when Jesus returns?
  • When God was supposed to have given the human creature "dominion" over the other animals, were there any boundaries on our behaviour?
  • What can the churches realistically do about the ecological crisis, given that we are so small compared with the rest of society? We were encouraged to be specific!
  • Does God care if other plants and animals become extinct?
  • Does God care if humans become extinct any more or any less than God cares about the rest of life?

The journey continues as we and other congregations both inside and outside the United Church join together to address this immense problem.
